The TPO Training and Capacity Building Unit was formed in 1999 to provide specialised training to districts, NGOs’ and other actors that are looking to integrate and/or mainstream psychosocial and mental health care into their regular programs. Our approach to psychosocial care emphasises a family and community based model that relies on local knowledge and expertise to manage problems in their midst. We advocate an integrated approach, fusing local knowledge with western approaches, supporting a diverse range of actors acquire capacity within their respective interventions, to recognise and support the psychosocial needs of families and communities in distress.
Our Training Unit has over the past eight years built a sound reputation in the Great Lakes Region of providing technical support and capacity building to either agencies wanting to integrate psychosocial care in their interventions; professionals looking for practical experience and exposure to family oriented psychosocial support or academic institutions looking to link their classroom training program to a practical field site.
In Uganda, this Unit is working with two local Universities to integrate Psychosocial and Mental health Care into University academic programs. The Unit has established a multimillion community training institute in Arua - North Western Uganda and plans are underway to commence scheduled academic programs at the institute, once the affiliation process with these universities is completed. Outside Uganda, the TPO Capacity Building and Training Unit was part of the humanitarian response, supporting local actors to deliver child protection and psychosocial support services during the post election violence in Kenya. The Unit is active in Somalia, where we are supporting 11 local CBOs to deliver child protection and psychosocial support services. The Unit has in the past been active in Liberia undertaking a similar assignment to support local partners undertake child focused and psychosocial support services.
