Livelihoods & Food Security

This thematic area fits well into our holistic approach to post conflict recovery and rehabilitation. Whilst supporting communities and individuals to overcome the traumatic and psychological consequences of conflict and disaster, we endeavour to support households become food secure and to improve their livelihoods. Under the food security component, target households are organised into groups of a minimum 15 families each - equally represented by both spouses. Beneficiaries typically include; HIV/AIDS orphans, families of children associated with fighting forces, persons living with HIV/AIDS, families of persons with mental illness, female survivors of gender based violence and other vulnerable individuals.

These farmer groups then receive training in increasing crop production, modern and sustainable farming methods, post harvest handling, savings and income management. Farmer groups are then provided with improved agricultural seeds, tools and implements.

The livelihoods component focuses on empowering households through knowledge dissemination, training and providing them opportunity to identify and access alternative development initiatives. As example, families are trained on hygiene and nutritional practices; family planning and on the causes and management of common community illnesses especially HIV/AIDs and waterborne diseases. Additionally TPO lobbies and links these beneficiary groups to other government development initiatives as well as periodically invite them to participate in reviewing and monitoring project activities.
